My idea was to produce a work that both enhances the building, and also reflects the young users and their environment. I wanted there to be an element of familiarity from nature that the children have encountered locally, so I used the deer from Greenwich Park and the neighbouring silver birch as inspiration. I decided to make reference to the importance of the children's interaction with nature, representative of the idea of growth and development. The tree motif symbolises 'the support system' provided by the nursery and teachers. The birds represent the children’s time at the school, as symbolised by their eventual flight in the final panel.
Thank you to Peter Davies who proposed the commission.
